The set of players owned by a high percentage of top-ranked FPL managers — forming the baseline squad from which differentiation is measured.
The FPL template refers to the players most commonly held by elite managers — typically those in the top 10k or top 100k of the overall standings. Template players are owned by such a large proportion of top managers that not owning them creates significant "red arrow risk" — if a template player hauls and you don't own them, your rank falls sharply.
Early in the season, the template is determined by strong pre-season form and low price. As the season progresses, it shifts based on fixture difficulty, injuries, and which players have consistently returned. By gameweek 20+, the template is often self-reinforcing — managers own template players to avoid risk, which further concentrates ownership.
The central FPL strategic question is how many template players to hold versus how many differentials. A squad of all template players will track the average elite manager closely — your rank will be stable but you cannot gain significantly on the field. Differentials create the variance necessary to climb into the top 10k or win a mini-league.
Data-driven FPL involves quantifying the expected score of each player using xG and xA projections, comparing them to ownership percentage, and identifying where the expected return per ownership percentage point is highest. High expected return + low ownership = strongest differential case.
Differential (Fantasy)
A fantasy football player owned by a small percentage of squads — selecting them when they perform well gives a significant advantage over rivals.
xA (Expected Assists)
A metric that measures the probability that a pass or cross will result in a goal, weighting each assist opportunity by the xG of the resulting shot.
xG (Expected Goals)
A metric that scores every shot by its probability of resulting in a goal, based on factors like shot location, angle, and assist type.
Clean Sheet
When a team concedes no goals in a match — a key metric for defenders and goalkeepers in fantasy football and defensive analysis.
