An FPL chip that allows unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, with the squad reverting to its previous state the following week.
The Free Hit is a one-time chip available to every Fantasy Premier League manager. When activated, it allows you to make unlimited free transfers for that gameweek only. After the gameweek concludes, your squad automatically reverts to the same 15 players you had before activating the Free Hit — including prices at the time of activation. Any transfers, price changes, or team-building during the Free Hit week are undone.
This makes the Free Hit fundamentally different from a Wildcard. A Wildcard permanently changes your squad to whatever you build during the chip activation. The Free Hit is a temporary squad for one week only — ideal for blanket Gameweeks or Double Gameweeks where specific players are advantaged without you wanting to permanently restructure your team.
The optimal time to play the Free Hit is during a Blank Gameweek — a gameweek where several top clubs do not have a fixture (typically due to FA Cup ties). During blanks, many premium players will not play, so rebuilding your squad temporarily around the clubs who do play maximises your gameweek score.
Alternatively, the Free Hit can be played in a Double Gameweek to maximise players who play twice. This is especially powerful if several premium assets (captaincy targets, reliable premium forwards) are all in the Double Gameweek clubs. Rather than making expensive permanent transfers, the Free Hit captures the Double Gameweek bonus without lasting structural disruption.
Since your squad reverts after the Free Hit, focus purely on maximising that one week's expected points — ignore price, long-term value, and fit with your existing squad. Stock up on players from Double Gameweek clubs, pick the best goalkeeper from an active club, and captain your highest-ceiling asset playing twice.
Coordinate your Free Hit with your Wildcard: if you play Wildcard before a blank and Free Hit during the blank, you enter the blank with your ideal long-term squad intact and use the chip to temporarily cover blanking players. Alternatively, play Wildcard after the blank to rebuild once you know which clubs are on a good fixture run.
