An FPL chip that scores points for all 15 players in your squad — not just the starting XI — for one gameweek.
The Bench Boost is an FPL chip that, when activated, counts the points scored by all four bench players in addition to the starting XI for one gameweek — giving you the total points scored by all 15 players in your squad. Normally, bench players only score if they are brought on as auto-substitutes for non-playing starters. With Bench Boost active, all four bench players score regardless.
Each manager gets one Bench Boost chip per season. It can be used in any gameweek, typically in combination with a Double Gameweek — a gameweek where some teams play twice. If your bench players all feature in Double Gameweek fixtures, the potential points uplift is significant.
Bench Boost is most powerful in a large Double Gameweek where many teams play twice and your bench is stacked with players from those teams. Ideally, all four bench players play both their fixtures during the Bench Boost gameweek — maximising the potential points from 4 extra players × 2 games each.
The most common mistake with Bench Boost is activating it in a gameweek with minimal bench coverage — if bench players are cheap enablers or injury-prone players who might not play, the chip yields minimal additional points. Saving the chip specifically for a large Double Gameweek significantly improves its expected return versus activating it in a normal gameweek.
Knowing you want to deploy Bench Boost in a future Double Gameweek should influence how you construct your bench throughout the season. Rather than selecting the cheapest possible bench players to maximise first-team budget, managers may choose slightly more expensive bench options who are more likely to play regularly and accumulate points when the chip activates.
Planning Bench Boost 4–6 gameweeks in advance — by identifying likely Double Gameweek fixtures and transferring bench players from those clubs before prices rise — is standard practice among high-ranking FPL managers. The chip's value is almost entirely in the planning phase, not the activation moment.
Wildcard (FPL Chip)
An FPL chip that allows unlimited free transfers for a single gameweek without points penalties — typically used to rebuild a struggling squad.
Triple Captain (FPL Chip)
An FPL chip that triples rather than doubles your captain's points for one gameweek — best used when your captain has a standout double gameweek.
FDR (Fixture Difficulty Rating)
A numerical rating for upcoming fixtures that indicates how difficult each match is for a given team, used to identify favourable fantasy football selections.
Template Player
A highly-owned FPL asset owned by the majority of competitive managers — avoiding them creates 'template risk'.
Differential (Fantasy)
A fantasy football player owned by a small percentage of squads — selecting them when they perform well gives a significant advantage over rivals.
