A wide player in a three-at-the-back system who provides both defensive cover and attacking width — effectively a hybrid full-back and winger.
A wing-back is a wide player in a defensive system using three central defenders (typically a 3-5-2, 3-4-3, or 5-3-2 shape). Unlike a traditional full-back in a back four, the wing-back has explicit license and responsibility to push forward into attacking positions — providing width, crossing, overlapping runs, and sometimes cutting inside to shoot. Their defensive role is less intense than a full-back because the three central defenders provide cover behind them.
When the team is out of possession, wing-backs typically drop back to form a flat back five — the three centre-backs plus the two wing-backs across the defensive line. This defensive back-five is extremely difficult to break down centrally. When in possession, the wing-backs push high and wide, stretching the opposition full-backs and creating space for the three central attackers.
Wing-backs cover enormous distances during a match — repeatedly sprinting forward from a deep position into the opposition half, then tracking back to defend. They require both the defensive intelligence of a full-back and the technical quality of a winger. High aerobic capacity, sprinting speed, and technical ability in wide positions under pressure are essential.
Famous wing-backs include Marcos Alonso (Chelsea), Ashley Young, Achraf Hakimi (multiple clubs), and Kieran Trippier. Teams that use wing-backs effectively often have wider defensive weaknesses at the edges of the box when the wing-back is caught out of position — these areas can be targeted by opposition wide players.
Fantasy football managers value wing-backs who accumulate attacking returns — goals, assists, and clean sheet bonuses from a defensive position. The best wing-backs combine volume attacking involvement (crosses, chances created, xA) with the clean sheet bonus potential of a defender. In FPL, they score as defenders, making their attacking output particularly valuable in terms of points-per-price.
In betting, teams using wing-backs often produce more crossing statistics and crosses-per-game, which in turn generates more header-based chances and corners. Knowing a team uses wing-backs helps calibrate corner market and heading-chance xG estimates for individual match prediction.
High Press
A defensive tactic where a team aggressively pressures opponents high up the pitch, attempting to win the ball back in the opposition's half.
Low Block
A deep, compact defensive setup where a team defends close to their own goal, prioritising shape and compactness over winning possession high up the pitch.
Inverted Winger
A wide player deployed on their weaker foot to cut inside onto their stronger foot and shoot or create, rather than cross.
xA (Expected Assists)
A metric that measures the probability that a pass or cross will result in a goal, weighting each assist opportunity by the xG of the resulting shot.
FDR (Fixture Difficulty Rating)
A numerical rating for upcoming fixtures that indicates how difficult each match is for a given team, used to identify favourable fantasy football selections.
