The structured process by which a team moves the ball from defence to attack — often beginning with the goalkeeper or centre-backs.
Build-up play describes the tactical and technical process of advancing the ball from the defensive phase (receiving the ball from the goalkeeper or winning it back in the defensive third) through the middle third and into the attacking third. Quality build-up play creates numerical and positional advantages for attacking players by the time the ball reaches the final third.
Teams differ dramatically in their build-up approach. Possession-oriented teams (Guardiola, Klopp) use structured patterns — goalkeeper playing short to a centre-back, who passes to a holding midfielder, who rotates the ball — to advance through the pitch safely and draw opponents out of position. Direct teams bypass the midfield by launching long balls over the press to a target striker.
Build-up play quality is tested most acutely against high-pressing opponents. A team with excellent build-up will play through the press effectively, using progressive passes and carries to advance the ball even under pressure. A team with poor build-up resistance will concede possession frequently in dangerous areas when pressed — generating xG for the pressing team from turnovers.
PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) measures how aggressively a team presses, and indirectly, how well their opponent's build-up is being disrupted. Low PPDA for the pressing team + high turnover rate in the opponent's defensive third = pressing superiority over the opponent's build-up.
PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action)
A measure of pressing intensity — how many opposition passes are allowed before a defensive action is made in the opponent's half.
Progressive Passes
Passes that move the ball significantly closer to the opponent's goal — a key indicator of a team's attacking play style.
Press Resistance
A team or player's ability to maintain possession and play out from pressure rather than resorting to long balls.
High Press
A defensive tactic where a team aggressively pressures opponents high up the pitch, attempting to win the ball back in the opposition's half.
Tiki-Taka
A possession-based style characterised by short passes, movement, and maintaining the ball to create and deny space.
