The planning of when to use FPL's four special chips — Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, and Triple Captain — to maximise points across the season.
Fantasy Premier League provides four chips over the course of the season: two Wildcards (one per half of the season), Free Hit (play a different team for one gameweek), Bench Boost (bench players also score), and Triple Captain (captain earns 3× rather than 2× points). Playing them at the optimal time is one of the highest-leverage decisions in FPL.
The data-driven approach to chip planning involves: identifying Double Gameweeks early (when teams have two fixtures in one GW), tracking which teams have favourable fixture runs, and monitoring the FPL calendar for known Blank Gameweeks that create Free Hit value.
Wildcard is most powerful after a major injury crisis (reset a damaged squad) or entering a favourable fixture swing (restructure around a strong run). Free Hit is best used in a Blank Gameweek — when many of your regular players have no fixture, you can temporarily fill the team with those who do play. Bench Boost is most valuable in a large Double Gameweek where 8+ of your squad have two fixtures. Triple Captain should target a fixture where your captain has the highest expected points ceiling — typically a premium striker in a Double Gameweek against weak opposition.
Many managers mistime chips by reacting to current form rather than planning ahead. The best chip strategies are set 4–6 gameweeks in advance based on fixture data and known schedule patterns.
Wildcard (FPL Chip)
An FPL chip that allows unlimited free transfers for a single gameweek without points penalties — typically used to rebuild a struggling squad.
Free Hit Chip
An FPL chip that allows unlimited free transfers for one gameweek, with the squad reverting to its previous state the following week.
Bench Boost (FPL Chip)
An FPL chip that scores points for all 15 players in your squad — not just the starting XI — for one gameweek.
Triple Captain (FPL Chip)
An FPL chip that triples rather than doubles your captain's points for one gameweek — best used when your captain has a standout double gameweek.
Double Gameweek
A gameweek in which a club plays two fixtures — allowing managers who own their players to score double points from them.
Differential (Fantasy)
A fantasy football player owned by a small percentage of squads — selecting them when they perform well gives a significant advantage over rivals.
