Passes, carries, or crosses that move the ball into the final third of the opposition's half — a measure of attacking momentum and creation.
Deep progressions (also called final-third entries or progressive actions) count the number of times a team successfully moves the ball into the opposition's final third through passes, carries, or crosses that penetrate the defensive block. Unlike possession statistics, deep progressions measure whether a team is moving the ball in dangerous directions, not just maintaining it.
Teams with high deep progression rates are typically attacking sides who can break lines consistently. Teams with low rates — regardless of possession share — are failing to create genuine attacking threat, which usually shows up in low xG totals even when they have the ball more than their opponents.
Deep progressions correlate well with xG generated — they are often a leading indicator of whether a team is building dangerous attacks. A team generating 35+ deep progressions per game is consistently threatening the opposition's goal; one generating under 15 is being effectively neutralised even with the ball.
Combined with conversion rates (xG per deep progression entry), the metric reveals both volume of threat and quality of execution. A high-pressing team forcing turnovers high up the pitch may have fewer deep progressions but much higher xG per entry — because each progression is from a position of advantage rather than patiently building through defensive blocks.
xG (Expected Goals)
A metric that scores every shot by its probability of resulting in a goal, based on factors like shot location, angle, and assist type.
Progressive Passes
Passes that move the ball significantly closer to the opponent's goal — a key indicator of a team's attacking play style.
Carry Distance
The total distance a player moves the ball forward with their feet — a measure of ball-carrying ability and progressive dribbling.
PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action)
A measure of pressing intensity — how many opposition passes are allowed before a defensive action is made in the opponent's half.
xA (Expected Assists)
A metric that measures the probability that a pass or cross will result in a goal, weighting each assist opportunity by the xG of the resulting shot.
