The highest stake a bookmaker will accept on a specific market — a practical ceiling on how much you can profit from any edge.
Every bookmaker imposes maximum stake limits — some published, most determined dynamically based on the market, the bettor's account profile, and the bet size relative to the available liquidity. On major markets (Premier League 1X2), maximums can run into tens of thousands of pounds. On obscure markets (lower league corners), they may be as low as £5–£10.
Maximum bet limits are the primary mechanism bookmakers use to manage risk exposure. They reduce maximum stakes for consistently winning accounts — a signal that the bettor has identified a genuine edge. A bookmaker that cuts your maximum to £2 has implicitly acknowledged you have been profitable.
Professional value bettors operate across multiple bookmakers to aggregate betting capacity. If maximum bets are £50 at bookmaker A, £30 at B, and £100 at C for the same market, a value bettor can place £180 total on a single edge. As accounts get restricted, maintaining a wide range of bookmaker accounts in good standing becomes as important as finding the edge itself.
Exchanges (Betfair, Smarkets) do not restrict winning accounts — they charge commission on winnings. Exchange limits are determined by available matched liquidity, which on major markets is typically far higher than bookmaker maximums.
Sharp Money
Bets placed by professional bettors ('sharps') whose action bookmakers respect and respond to with line movement.
Value Betting
Betting at odds that are higher than the true probability of the outcome — finding bets where the bookmaker has underestimated the chances of an event.
Kelly Criterion
A mathematical formula that calculates the optimal fraction of your bankroll to stake on a bet, maximising long-term growth given your estimated edge.
Arbitrage (Arb)
Simultaneously backing all outcomes of an event across different bookmakers at odds that guarantee a profit regardless of the result.
CLV (Closing Line Value)
The difference between the odds you backed and the odds at match kick-off — the best long-term predictor of whether your betting strategy has a genuine edge.
