The number of times a player attempts to pressure an opponent in possession — a key measure of defensive work rate and pressing contribution.
Pressures (tracked by FBref/Opta) count the number of times a player applies pressure on an opponent who is receiving, carrying, or passing the ball. A pressure is counted when the player comes within arm's reach of the opponent during the action. Successful pressures lead to turnovers or forced errors; unsuccessful pressures are still counted.
Pressures per 90 is a key metric for forwards and attacking midfielders in high-pressing systems. Managers like Klopp, Ten Hag, and Guardiola demand extremely high pressure numbers from their front lines — using forwards as the first line of defence to win the ball high up the pitch.
Pressure success rate (pressures leading to possession wins / total pressures) refines the raw count. A player with 30 pressures per 90 and a 30% success rate is generating significantly more turnovers than one with 30 pressures and a 15% success rate. The combination of high pressure volume and high success rate identifies elite pressing forwards.
PPDA at team level aggregates the individual pressure contributions of all players — teams with the lowest PPDA (most aggressive pressing) tend to have forwards with the highest pressure numbers and success rates.
PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action)
A measure of pressing intensity — how many opposition passes are allowed before a defensive action is made in the opponent's half.
Gegenpressing
An immediate, coordinated counter-press immediately after losing possession — attempting to win the ball back within seconds before the opposition can organise.
High Press
A defensive tactic where a team aggressively pressures opponents high up the pitch, attempting to win the ball back in the opposition's half.
Field Tilt
A metric expressing how much one team is dominating territorial pressure — calculated as that team's share of total shots or xG in a match.
Build-Up Play
The structured process by which a team moves the ball from defence to attack — often beginning with the goalkeeper or centre-backs.
