What Is a False 9 in Football? Definition and Famous Examples
A false 9 is a centre-forward who drops deep into midfield rather than holding a high attacking line. We explain the role, why it works, and famous false 9s including Lionel Messi and Roberto Firmino.
A false 9 is a nominal centre-forward who drops deep into midfield rather than holding a high attacking line. The objective is to drag opposition centre-backs out of position β they either follow the false 9 (creating space behind for wingers and attacking midfielders to exploit) or stay in their defensive line (giving the false 9 free space to receive). Famously deployed by Lionel Messi at Barcelona under Pep Guardiola, and Roberto Firmino at Liverpool under JΓΌrgen Klopp.
How the false 9 works
- Nominally listed as a centre-forward. Wears the 9 shirt, lines up high in the team-sheet shape.
- Actually plays deeper. Drops 10-15m back into midfield in possession, vacating the central forward space.
- Two outcomes both benefit the attacking team. If CBs follow β space behind for wingers / attacking mids. If CBs hold β false 9 receives unmarked.
- Wingers / inside-forwards exploit the space. They run beyond the false 9 to attack the gaps left by drawn-out CBs.
- Requires elite passing + dribbling. False 9 must combine playmaking with finishing β not a target-man role.
The "9" in false 9 is the historic shirt number for the centre-forward. Calling them "false" reflects that they're lined up as the CF but don't play the role traditionally.
Famous false 9s
- Lionel Messi (Barcelona, 2008-2012). The defining false 9 era. Pep Guardiola deployed Messi as the false 9 in a 4-3-3 with Pedro / Henry / Villa around him. Won 3 La Liga titles + 2 UCLs.
- Roberto Firmino (Liverpool, 2015-2023). Klopp's false 9; allowed Salah and ManΓ© to run from wide positions into space behind. UCL 2019, Premier League 2020.
- Cesc FΓ bregas (Spain, Euro 2012). Vicente del Bosque deployed FΓ bregas as a false 9 in the final vs Italy. Spain won 4-0.
- Francesco Totti (Roma, 2006-2007). Spalletti's 4-6-0 / 4-2-3-1 hybrid with Totti as false 9; Roma scored 74 goals that Serie A season.
- Modern variants. Kai Havertz at Chelsea, Joshua Zirkzee at Bologna, others have rotated through the role.
How to defend against a false 9
- Don't follow. CBs hold the defensive line; pass the false 9 to a deep midfielder.
- Press the deep midfielder taking the pass. Disrupts the false 9's service.
- Mid-block compactness. Compact 8-12m vertical lines deny the false 9 the space to receive.
- Aggressive press on the false 9 in possession. When the false 9 drops deep, press them to force a turnover.
False 9 vs related roles
- False 9. Nominal CF dropping deep; primary creator role.
- Withdrawn striker / Number 10. Plays deeper than the CF as a designed role; not a "false" anything.
- Trequartista. Italian term for an attacking midfielder operating between midfield and attack β similar functional area to false 9 but listed as a midfielder.
- Inverted forward. Wide forward who drifts centrally; not the same as false 9 which is centrally listed but drops deep.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a false 9 in football?
- A false 9 is a nominal centre-forward who drops deep into midfield rather than holding a high attacking line. The objective is to drag opposition centre-backs out of position β either creating space behind (if CBs follow) or letting the false 9 receive freely (if CBs hold).
- Who are famous false 9s?
- Lionel Messi at Barcelona under Pep Guardiola (2008-2012) is the defining example β won 3 La Liga titles + 2 Champions Leagues. Roberto Firmino at Liverpool under JΓΌrgen Klopp (2015-2023) is the modern canonical example. Cesc FΓ bregas, Francesco Totti, and Kai Havertz have also played false 9.
- Why does the false 9 work?
- It creates a tactical dilemma for opposition CBs. If they follow the false 9 deep, they leave space behind for wingers/attacking mids to exploit. If they hold the line, the false 9 receives unmarked between defensive lines. Both outcomes benefit the attacking team β the CBs lose either way.
- How do you defend against a false 9?
- Don't follow with CBs β hold the defensive line and pass the false 9 to a deep midfielder to mark. Then press that midfielder when they receive the ball, disrupting service. Mid-block compactness (8-12m vertical lines) also denies the false 9 the space to receive between lines.
