Expected assists measures the likelihood that a given pass becomes a goal assist. In practice it credits the passer with the expected goals (xG) value of the shot their pass creates, so a pass that sets up a great chance earns more xA than one that leads to a low-quality effort.
An assist only counts if the shot is scored, which depends on the finisher. xA rewards chance creation regardless of whether the teammate finishes, so it is a fairer, less noisy measure of a playmaker's output over time.
Use the xG of the shot the pass created — a cut-back to the penalty spot might be 0.2, a deep cross closer to 0.05. The pass-type presets here give rough starting values you can override.
Open-play xA models sometimes weight a pass by how likely it is to reach its target. If you are scoring completed key passes only, leave completion at 100%; lower it to value ambitious passes that often fail.
