The definitional reference for FGS β how the market settles, dead-heat rules, the 10β15% margin economics, and why variance is so high. For the player-pricing workflow, see the First Goalscorer Strategy guide.
First goalscorer (FTGS) bets settle on the player who scores the first goal of the match from open play, penalties, or free kicks. The key rules:
β All FTGS bets lose β no refund
Unlike anytime goalscorer which is void
β Bet loses
Must be first goal, not any goal
Own goals usually do not count
Check your bookmaker's rules β most exclude own goals
π Usually void and stake returned
Varies by bookmaker β check terms
β Bet usually wins
Player just needs to be on the pitch when it goes in
Bookmakers estimate FTGS probability using a two-step formula:
Step 1: Anytime goalscorer probability
Based on player goals per 90 mins, xG, minutes played, team attacking pattern.
Step 2: First goalscorer probability
FTGS β Anytime prob Γ (1 Γ· expected total goals in match)
Example: Player with 45% anytime prob, match expected goals 2.5
FTGS β 45% Γ (1 Γ· 2.5) = 45% Γ 40% = 18% β fair odds 5.55
(Actual models are more complex β this is a simplification)
The key insight: FTGS probability is a fraction of anytime probability. If a player has a 45% chance of scoring at any point, they have roughly a 15β20% chance of scoring first (depending on expected total goals). Bookmakers apply a 20β35% combined overround on FTGS markets, making this one of the lowest-value markets to bet systematically.
| Player type | FTGS prob | Anytime prob | FTGS:ATGS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penalty-taker striker | 12β18% | 45β60% | ~0.25β0.35 | Highest first goalscorer value β penalties often come early and convert at 76% |
| Central striker (starter) | 10β15% | 35β50% | ~0.25β0.35 | Most consistent FTGS source. Must play 90 mins. Avoid rotation risk. |
| Inverted winger | 6β10% | 25β40% | ~0.20β0.28 | High shot volume but lower first-goal-specific probability due to later chances. |
| Attacking midfielder | 5β8% | 20β35% | ~0.18β0.25 | Often assists rather than scores. FTGS margin punishing at this probability. |
| Full-back / wide defender | 1β3% | 8β15% | ~0.12β0.20 | Set piece threat only. Very high margin in FTGS market at these odds. |
The overwhelming majority of profitable goalscorer bets are anytime goalscorer, not first goalscorer. Here is why:
| Feature | First Goalscorer | Anytime Goalscorer |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement | First goal only | Any goal in match |
| 0-0 result | β Lose stake | π Void / returned |
| Typical market margin | 20β40% | 10β20% |
| Typical odds for top striker | 4.0β8.0 | 1.80β2.80 |
| Value betting viability | Difficult β high margin | Better β lower margin |
| Penalty benefit | β High β converts at 76% | β Same benefit |
Rule of thumb
If you have a genuine model edge on a player scoring, take that edge at anytime goalscorer odds with a lower margin. Only consider FTGS when the offered odds represent significantly more than the implied fair FTGS probability β which happens occasionally when markets lag model updates.
First goalscorer betting means predicting which player will score the first goal of a match. Your bet wins only if your selected player scores first β if they score but are not the first goalscorer, the bet loses. If the match ends 0-0, all first goalscorer bets are settled as losers (no refunds, unlike anytime goalscorer).
Bookmakers estimate the probability of a player scoring first by combining: the probability that the player scores at all (anytime scorer probability), divided by the estimated number of goals in the match, with an adjustment for the player's position in the scoring order. Players who start matches and take penalties have significantly higher first goalscorer probability.
Anytime goalscorer is almost always better expected value than first goalscorer for the same player. First goalscorer carries a significant position discount β you need the player to score first, not just score. The bookmaker margin on first goalscorer markets is typically 20β40%, far higher than most other markets. If you believe in a player scoring, anytime goalscorer at lower odds is the more efficient bet.
The best first goalscorer candidates are: penalty-takers at attacking-minded teams (who often score early through converted penalties), starting strikers with high shot-per-game rates who play 90 minutes regularly, and players in strong form against vulnerable defences. Avoid midfielders unless they are high-volume shooters β they score less often and later in matches on average.
