When teams finish level on points, the Premier League ranks them by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head record. If still level and a title, relegation or European place is at stake, a play-off match can be arranged.
UEFA and La Liga apply head-to-head results between the tied teams first, before goal difference. That is why the toggle matters — the same records can produce a different order depending on the competition.
Some competitions use a fair-play tie-breaker where yellow and red cards convert to points; the team with fewer accumulated disciplinary points ranks higher. It is usually one of the last criteria applied.
If every criterion is identical, the outcome is decided by a play-off match or, in some competitions, the drawing of lots.
