How does an each-way bet work?

An each-way bet is two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet, each for the same stake. Total cost is stake × 2. The win part pays the full advertised odds if your selection wins. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5) if your selection finishes within the specified number of places (e.g. top 3).

Place odds = 1 + (Win odds − 1) × fraction. For a selection at 8.0 decimal (7/1 fractional) with 1/4 place terms: Place odds = 1 + (8.0 − 1) × 0.25 = 1 + 1.75 = 2.75. A £10 place stake returns £27.50.

When is an each-way bet positive expected value?

An each-way bet is positive EV for the place part when the implied place probability (based on place odds) is lower than your estimated true place probability. For example, if the place odds are 2.75 (36.4% implied) but you think the selection has a 45% chance of placing, the place part has positive expected value. This is how professional each-way bettors find edges in outright and winner markets.
